Everything You Need to Know About Peels

As we head into fall, it’s the perfect time to talk about peels. At Skin Deep, we offer a wide variety of treatments to support the individual skin needs of each of our clients. Chemical peels are certainly one tool in our toolbox that can help with a variety of skin conditions.

In this month’s blog, we’re talking about why you may want to try peels, as well as a few other things you might not know about these incredible treatments!

What exactly is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a skin treatment that provides both immediate and lasting results. We use a variety of professional-grade peels from the trusted brands we work with. They vary in active ingredients and in what they’re specifically addressing, so chatting with your esthetician about your skincare goals and a skin analysis will help your esthetician know which peel is right for you. Chemical peels can help with signs of aging including wrinkles and fine lines, hyperpigmentation, acne, and acne scarring.

The peel gently removes the top damaged layers of skin, revealing a fresh layer much more quickly than your natural skin regeneration. This is appealing to many because as we age, our skin regeneration slows down.

For most people in their 20s, their skin regenerates about once a month. In older adults, the skin's cell turnover rate may lengthen to approximately 40 to 50 days or more. This slower regeneration causes more dead skin cells to accumulate, which many people describe as dullness in their skin.

By accelerating that regeneration, peels restore a youthful glow, gradually easing skin imperfections and evening out skin tone and texture.

Other things to know about peels!

Here are a few other things about getting a peel at Skin Deep.

  • Fall, winter, and early spring are the best time to do peels. Because peels reveal a fresh layer of skin, it’s important to stay out of the sun for several days after having a peel. This is hard to do for many of us over the summer. And, you’ll likely continue to be in the sun for the remainder of the summer, causing some of the same concerns to return (like sun spots/hyperpigmentation.) Because of this, clients see the best results with peels when done over the winter months.

  • Peels are best when completed in a set of 3 or 6. After your first peel, you’ll see a vibrance to your skin that will only increase over the next few weeks. However, the best results occur after a series of three to six peels. Your esthetician will recommend a treatment that’s right for you, but it’s common for our clients to get three to six peels with each treatment one month apart. We even have a discounted package when you purchase three peels at once, saving you $50.

  • Peels feel different to everyone. Peels are a safe and effective way to get great results for your skin. Whether or not your skin actually “peels” and whether or not you’ll feel a heat sensation during the treatment is very dependent on the individual. As with all of our treatments, your esthetician will work closely with you to find the best skincare treatments for your unique skin.
