Why We Love Teaching Teens About Skincare

At Skin Deep, we are passionate about teaching teens how to get through their hormonal years without scarring their skin. We love educating teenage boys and girls on how to care for their skin, make changes to their lifestyle to prevent breakouts, and prioritize self-care. Below, we share some skincare basics for teens and highlight what we do here at Skin Deep to set your teens up for success into adulthood.

What We Teach Teens at Skin Deep

Each teen experiences different effects of hormones and lifestyle on their skin. At Skin Deep, it's our job to teach our teen clients how to take care of their skin, and you can reinforce it at home too. Here are many of the skincare basics we talk about with our teens when they come in for a facial.

  1. Develop a daily skincare routine at home. An effective skincare regimen starts with cleansing morning and night to remove impurities, including excess oil, makeup, and dirt. Next, because we live in a dry environment, it’s essential to use a moisturizer to prevent acne.

  2. Use sunscreen. We teach teens to use a daily moisturizer with SPF. We have many of them here at Skin Deep and can help your teen find one that works well with their skin type.

  3. Don’t pick your skin. The main thing we want to prevent during the teenage years is acne scarring. Picking can lead to scarring that can damage a teen’s self-esteem, even into adulthood. We teach teens to deal with breakouts so they heal quickly and don’t scar.

  4. Consider your diet. Not all breakouts are diet-related, and people can have a great diet and still experience breakouts. However, sometimes eating too much sugar or a high dairy intake can cause teen acne. We help our teens get to the root of what is causing their breakouts. For some of them, changing up their diets provides a lot of relief from acne.

  5. Change pillowcases and towels. Along the lines of discovering the causes of teen acne, we teach teens to change their pillowcases every week and always use a clean towel to prevent bacteria and dirt from causing clogged pores.

  6. Avoid touching your face. We educate teens to only touch their face when they are washing it. Oils, dirt, and bacteria on our hands are sometimes the cause of breakouts.

What to Expect from a Teen Facial at Skin Deep?

We have two types of teen facials available on our menu. The first is our classic Teen Facial—Intro to Skincare. This appointment is ideal for our young teens who are just entering the world of skincare and don’t yet have skin concerns.  At this half-hour appointment, your teen will get an introduction to proper skincare from our caring estheticians. The appointment includes a consultation, skin analysis, deep cleanse, exfoliation, steam, specialty mask, and an application of skin-specific serums and SPF. We’ll also include recommendations and education for personalized home care routine.

If your teen is experiencing sporadic breakouts or active acne, they will enjoy our Teen Acne Facial. At this appointment, your teen will get a deep cleansing facial that reduces breakouts and balances oil production. It includes a cleanse, deep exfoliation, extractions, and application of a balancing mask, skin-specific serums, and SPF.

We will also include recommendations and education for a personalized home care routine. We chat with them about their lifestyle including diet and daily habits that can cause acne so we can help them get to the root of what is causing their acne to alleviate it.

And, during August, all teens who come in for a facial will get a complimentary cleanser that is right for their skin type to begin or maintain their at-home skincare routine.
